The Casamance forest region is already vulnerable to the effects of global climate change, including the advance of
the Sahara Desert, which is a main driver of Senegalese immigration to Europe. However deforestation has recently accelerated this trend due to the illegal sale of timber from Senegal to neighboring Gambia. The result of this traffic is that Senegal has lost more than 1 million of trees since 2010, while operators based in Gambia have pocketed about 140 billion FCFA by exporting this wood to China where the demand for furniture is increasing.
